What is SPF+?

September 24, 2019

The SFP+ product family extends the reach of small form factor pluggable (SFP) interconnect systems to up to 10 Gb/s. The system meets the performance requirements of the SFF (small) specification SFF-8431 and supports 8G Fibre Channel and 10G Ethernet applications. The SFP+ product line includes shields, connectors and copper cable assemblies.

Single-row application with 20 locations SMT connectors include an enhanced contact structure to reduce losses at higher data rates. The SFP+ and 16G SFP+ connectors continue to be compatible with the original SFP MSA and can be replaced directly. However, it can use alternative PCB layouts to reduce impedance discontinuities in the termination area of the motherboard

The 16G SFP+ product was developed to further expand the use of SFP form factors in 16G Fibre Channel applications and to achieve additional electrical performance benefits in 10Gb/s SFP+ applications.

The coaxial (single row) SFP+ shield features two designs for EMI cladding suppression: EMI springs and spring washers. Single port shields use only EMI springs. The shield is available in single port, 1x2, 1x4, and 1x6 port configurations. Light pipes are available for all SFP+ shield models. The 16G SFP+ shield is currently only available with a spring washer.
